<p>Beau Jo&#8217;s Colorado Style Pizza is one of the inspiring companies interviewed for Susan Hyatt&#8217;s book, <em>Strategy for Good.</em></p>
<p><a href="http://www.beaujos.com" target="_blank">Beau Jo’s</a> is a Colorado-based company that owns a chain of pizza restaurants. The company is an institution in Denver, both for the thick pizzas and for the way you finish them off: with a bottle of honey in which to dip the remaining crust (“built-in dessert”). There are two types of pizzas at Beau Jo’s: the original Mountain Pies with rolled crust at the end and Prairie Pies without the roll but a thinner layer of toppings. They come with a variety of sauce options and the usual pizza toppings along with a couple of unusual signature toppings such as tofu. The restaurant allows patrons to leave their mark at each casually decorated, mining antiques-filled site by drawing on a napkin and hanging it on the wall. <em>Denver Westword</em> named Beau Jo’s the “Best Pizza” readers’ choice winner in 2006. The restaurant strives to use healthy fixings in its pizzas, including whole wheat and gluten-free crust, and natural ingredients and toppings whenever possible.</p>
<p>Idaho Springs, where <a href="http://www.beaujos.com" target="_blank">Beau Jo’s</a> began, is a small community. The company’s giving philosophy has to do with the reality that the business can only grow so much within a small community without being involved. Originally the firm began its involvement to make the community in which it operates a better place to live for the residents and a better place for the company to do business. One of the ways the firm supports the community is by establishing dates sponsored by community organizations, where 20 percent of the pre-taxed revenues are donated to the sponsoring organization.</p>

<p><a href="http://thehelpfulhub.com/2011-lights-for-life-campaign/" target="_blank">From their website</a>, &#8220;Last year, Ace Hardware customers across the three states donated more than 30,000 pounds of holiday lights to the campaign, raising $14,000 for families of children diagnosed with cancer and bringing the total amount of lights donated by local Ace customers since 2008 to more than 77,000 pounds. Local stores hope to increase this year’s donation by 50 percent and have set a goal of collecting 45,000 pounds of holiday lights and extension cords during the 2011 holiday season.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong><em>“Each year, more than 200 million strings of incandescent lights are sold in the U.S., and most of them end up in the landfill,” said Linda Worthington, marketing director Lights For Life. “Just the small act of dropping your broken or old lights or extension cords in a collection bin at an Ace Hardware can make a big difference in the lives of the families of kids with cancer.”</em></strong></p>

The holiday light recycling program adds to the growing list recycling programs offered by area Ace Hardware stores. Many Ace Hardware stores also accept used compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), mercury-containing thermostats, used cell phones and rechargeable batteries for recycling.&#8221;</p>
<p>Great idea!  I always feel bad putting my strands of dead icicle lights in the trash&#8230;I have a box to go to Ace today!  How about you?</p>

It&#8217;s simple: non-profit organizations from across Colorado agree to register runners/walkers (and/or provide volunteers) for the marathon, half marathon or relay and then build a fund-raising campaign around those highly visible participants. With 73 charities participating, we&#8217;re the 4th largest program in the country!</p>
<p>The nonprofit keeps 100% of the pledges raised. In 2010, 41 charity partners raised close to $250,000.</p>

<p>What a great idea!  Fabulous way for Bellco to get great visibility with the over 2,000 volunteers helping make the event happen and stand out from all the other non-title sponsors of the event.  Having volunteers compete for $100 by posting photos on Facebook means many new people will go to their Facebook page and as they are looking at the posted photos, they will also learn a bit about Bellco and what they do.  Also, all the friends of those that post will also be able to see Bellco is involved in their newsfeeds.  Existing Bellco customers and employees will also see that Bellco is supporting local volunteers &#8211; I am sure that will build even greater loyalty among those folks, as well.</p>
<p>For a small investment, this will definitely get Bellco a lot of exposure at the same time they are honoring the volunteers that are giving of their time to make the marathon happen.  It is strategic and a great way to demonstrate their commitment to business giving and the community.   I like it!</p>

<p>During her intro, it was mentioned that she had started a nonprofit, <a title="Books for Treats" href="http://booksfortreats.org/" target="_blank">Books for Treats</a>.  I was curious&#8230;so of course I looked it up as soon as I got home. So what is Books for Treats?</p>
<p><span id="more-2967"></span>Turns out, Books for Treats is a program that encourages people to give “gently read” children’s books at Halloween instead of candy.  From the <a title="Books for Treats" href="http://booksfortreats.org/" target="_blank">website</a>, &#8220;Books feed children’s minds, while candy only feeds their cavities. Books encourage children to read, and parents to read with them and/or ask them about their books. Many children rarely receive books as gifts, so even gently read books are special treats.&#8221;</p>
<p>Books for Treats is a perfect &#8220;strategy for good&#8221; focus for <a href="http://rebeccamorgan.com/" target="_blank">Rebecca</a> as she is the author of over 15 books herself and, in addition to her international work on creating workforce effectiveness solutions, she teaches business people and speakers like myself how to get their content expertise out into the world by various means such as books, ebooks, blogs, vooks, webinars, etc.  Things she knows well from firsthand experience.</p>
<p>Books as treats &#8211; an even more fun idea to support as it aligns with her professional services.  The Book for Treats website gives testimonials and lists specific ways for people to get involved, which is great.  Many nonprofit websites do not do that piece well.  They tell you plenty about their mission and programs but specifics on what besides dollars you can do to help is often missing, in my experience.  So great job &#8211; being clear allows people to see how they can support the mission and giving a range of options allows diverse participation from others in communities.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://booksfortreats.org" target="_blank">Books for Treats website</a> lists the following options:</p>

<p>Do the nonprofits your company supports make it clear how others can support them in ways other than through a cash donation?  If not, encourage them to think about adding that.</p>
