Wells Fargo Community Connections

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

In today’s Denver Post, on Page 8B, Wells Fargo Bank had a full page ad titled” We Create Connections.”  The color ad has a paragraph at the top discussing Wells Fargo’s community investments.  “At Wells Fargo we believe in investing in the communities we serve.  But it’s more than just writing checks.  It’s about creating connections between customers, team members, and local non-profit organizations.  That’s why our team members in Colorado spend thousands of hours volunteering, serving on boards, and participating in community events.  Checks are important too.  Which is why Wells Fargo is proud to be a leading donor to Colorado non-profits, contributing more then $3.7 million in 2007 alone.  Wells Fargo salutes these outstanding organizations and the work they do to help make our communities great places to live, work, and do business.”

Below the paragraph, the bulk of the ad is taken up with an alphabetical list of names of more then 800 organizations that Wells Fargo supports.  Very impressive!

Four things I liked about the ad:

1.  Wells Fargo put the information out into the community about what they do so that everyone reading the paper has a sense of them as a company.   They went beyond just having a section on their website or in an annual report that goes to customers and other stakeholders.

2.  Wells Fargo provided a concrete dollar value for the support they have provided to Colorado nonprofits – $3.7 million represents a significant chunk of change and service hours provided to strengthen efforts to address local issues!

3.  They list the names of more than 800 organizations – it is a great visual but when reading the list, it is easy to see the wide variety of causes and organizations they support.  Says something about their community engagement for sure.

4.  While I usually am “all about” having businesses focus on fewer rather than greater numbers of nonprofits and causes to support, in this case that was clearly not the approach used by Wells…However, I am also “all about” tying a company’s community giving to its business goals.  In this case, Wells Fargo customers represent a wide cross section of the local population having many different causes they support.  Therefore, it is definitely in Wells Fargo’s business interest to support as many different types of organizations as possible in Colorado.  Absolutely fits with their business goals.

5.  OK…and I guess there is also a fifth thing I liked about this ad – Wells Fargo states they are about more than writing a check and instead provide other forms of support as well, including employee volunteer time.

There is more information about Wells Fargo in the community on their website.  On their community home page, it states company wide they are “Giving Hope: $266,000 per day to non-profits and 611,000 employee volunteer hours in 2007.”

Well done, Wells Fargo even though I no longer use you as my banking institution!  How can your company follow Wells Fargo’s lead and share what you are doing (whatever that might be and however comparatively small) with your current and potential customers?  It matters!

Kimpton Hotels

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

I am sweltering in Scottsdale, Arizona today.  I here to  facilitate a strategic planning session tomorrow for the Arizona Governor’s Commission on Service and Volunteerism and their National Service partners.  I am staying at the lovely Kimpton Hotels’, FireSky Resort and Spa…gorgeous place!  I am a big Kimpton fan ever since interviewing their COO, Niki Leondakis, for my forthcoming book on strategic business philanthropy.  Kimpton has a very well thought out community involvement program with national partners.

In the room, near the phone where the other literature on Kimpton Hotels and Restaurants is located, there is as always a brochure on Kimpton Cares, describing their approach to philanthropy.  In other Kimptons, I have seen posters in their elevators highlighting their partnerships.  Even the coffee sleeves for their free morning coffee feature information about their nonprofit partnerships.  I so appreciate that Kimpton takes every opportunity to present a consistent message in a variety of forms about how they support the community.  Makes it feel even better to me to stay at one of their lovely properties.

Indianapolis Colts Partnership with Books for Youth

As I have mentioned in prior posts, I am in Indiana conducting a statewide evaluation of their AmeriCorps Programs.  I am staying at the Hyatt (where else can I get pens free with my last name on them…???!!) a few short blocks away from the new Lucas Oil Stadium.  While I am not a football fanatic – I enjoy watching the sport and always like to do groundbreaking things.  Tonight is the Indianapolis Colts first game (albeit pre-season) against the Bills in the new stadium – so I decided to go.  The other evaluator had no interest in going with me so I got myself a ticket and will be braving it alone as a Broncos fan incognito in section 144!

Finish Line Shoe Donations

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

I am in Indianapolis for the weekend between rounds of AmeriCorps interviews for the statewide evaluation I am conducting.  I was wandering through Circle Center, the downtown shopping mall, and happened into Finish Line to look at athletic shoes.  Right inside the door was a big open box that said Sole Destination.  Reading the fine print I learned that customers bringing in an old pair of athletic shoes to donate when they buy a new pair, get $5 off their purchase. The old shoes go to Soles4Souls, a nonprofit whose mission is: To impact as many lives as possible with the gift of shoes.

Art with Heart

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Yesterday I was interviewed by Cheryl Powell, Medical Writer for the Akron Beacon Journal.  She is writing an article on Art with Heart, an Akron art gallery that has pledged 10% of their proceeds to the local Children’s Hospital as well as giving free art lessons to children touched by cancer.  Cheryl found me online and wanted to hear more about the business benefits of philanthropy as well as current trends in small business giving.  I look forward to reading her article and I was intrigued about the local business the story will be about.

Skydive for Charity?? G.A.P. Adventures Does!

Monday, August 18th, 2008

OK…so I am all about supporting nonprofits and actively seek to learn about the innovative strategies companies use to do that.  G.A.P Adventures’ Skydive for Charity is certainly creative but not one I will personally get involved with anytime soon!

Habitat for Humanity and Wells Fargo

Sunday, August 17th, 2008

I was in Indiana last week collecting data collection for a statewide evaluation I have been contracted to do by the State of Indiana on their AmeriCorps portfolio.  Indiana has a state level Habitat for Humanity organization which administers a grant from Indiana’s Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives to fund HabiCorps.  HabiCorps places AmeriCorps members at various Habitat for Humanity Affiliates around the state to help with volunteer recruitment and management, construction, partner family support, and other projects.

Denver and the New Starbucks Gold Card

Saturday, August 16th, 2008

Living in Denver has some perks…and it’s not just the view of the mountains!  Starbucks decided to pilot its new Gold card program here starting last month.  Since I live in Denver and use their refillable gift cards (it’s much easier to carry on a dog walk than cash!), I was invited via email to join last month.  On the website www.starbucks.com/gold it says, “If you enjoy espresso beverages, you’re in fine company. On average, Starbucks lovers in Denver drink more espresso beverages than the rest of the country, especially Caffe Lattes flavored with vanilla syrup or customized with soy milk.”  Who knew…
