An innovative program for Xcel Energy employees to serve the community helped Xcel garner an award Thursday from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado. Xcel, Colorado’s largest electric and gas utility, launched a program this year that allows all company employees to take 40 hours of paid leave per year to volunteer in the community. Many of the employees have contributed their time to mentoring at-risk youth in Colorado. The new program and participation by Xcel employees were instrumental in Xcel’s being named corporate partner of the year by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado. “Xcel has truly committed to giving all their energy in supporting the metro Denver community,” said Dave DeForest-Stalls, president of Big Brothers Big Sisters. “Their leadership clearly understands how important mentoring is to our business community, not only in developing a future workforce and building a strong community but also as leadership and character development for current employees who volunteer.” Xcel chief executive Dick Kelly said the utility’s goal is to donate $100,000 to the group this year and establish 100 employees as Big Brothers or Big Sisters.
